Chapter 25: The Last Supper

  • Main Truth: Love kneels, gives, and abides.
Jesus shows greatness by serving, not grasping—washing feet, giving Himself in bread and cup, and calling us to remain in His love by obedient trust.
  • Chapter Summary: In an upper room prepared for the meal, Jesus shocks the disciples by taking the lowest servant’s role and washing their feet, then exposes Judas as the betrayer and sends him into the night while teaching that true greatness looks like humble service. He then reframes everything: a new commandment to love as He has loved, bread and cup as His body and blood sealing the new covenant, and rich “table-talk” promising the Holy Spirit, peace, fruit-bearing union (“the Vine”), coming opposition, joy after sorrow, and His High Priest prayer for protection, holiness, unity, and mission—before they sing and head toward Gethsemane.
  • What You Will Learn in This Study:
    • Jesus redefines leadership with a towel: He uses His full authority to serve, teaching that kingdom greatness goes low on purpose.

    • Jesus cleanses His people and calls us to humble service: “If I don’t wash you…” shows we must receive His cleansing before we can live His way.

    • Jesus loves bravely in betrayal: He names the betrayer without losing the mission or hardening into bitterness—love endures even when trust breaks.

    • Jesus gives a new command that marks true disciples: The world recognises His followers by self-giving love, not spiritual noise.

    • Jesus is the only way to the Father: He doesn’t merely show a path—He is the way, truth, and life, and reveals the Father’s heart.

    • Jesus seals the new covenant with His own life: Bread and cup become a deliberate remembering—His body and blood poured out for forgiveness.

    • Jesus promises the Helper and a peace the world can’t give: The Spirit will dwell within, teach, remind, strengthen, and keep us steady when fear and hatred rise.

    • Jesus calls us to abide and bear lasting fruit: Staying connected to Him is the only way fruit actually remains—apart from Him we produce nothing that lasts.

    • Jesus prays like our High Priest: He asks for protection, holiness in truth, unity, joy, and mission—for the disciples and for all who will believe later (that’s us).

Chapter 24: The Betrayal

  • Main Truth: Glory comes through costly obedience.
Jesus shows that the road to real fruit and real glory isn’t grabbing power—it’s surrendering to the Father’s will, all the way to the cross.
  • Chapter Summary: In Bethany, Jesus receives an anointing that prepares Him for burial, while the leaders scheme in secret and Judas sells access to Him for thirty pieces of silver—proof that betrayal can be both “religious” and brutally practical. As Greeks ask to see Him, Jesus openly frames His “hour” as a seed falling into the ground: He will be lifted up to draw people to Himself, calls the crowd to walk in the Light, and makes one final public appeal before withdrawing.
  • What You Will Learn in This Study:
    • Jesus is worth “wasted” worship: He defends the woman’s costly devotion and calls it good, not excessive—because He is that valuable.

    • Jesus walks knowingly toward the cross: He speaks plainly about being handed over and crucified, showing this is mission, not misfortune.

    • Jesus turns betrayal into fulfilment, not derailment: Even Judas’ deal and the leaders’ plotting can’t hijack God’s purpose—Jesus keeps moving toward His appointed hour.

    • Jesus teaches fruitfulness through surrender: The “grain of wheat” isn’t just poetry—it’s His path to multiply life for many.

    • Jesus welcomes the nations: When Greeks come looking, Jesus reveals His death will draw “everyone” to Himself—His kingdom is bigger than one crowd.

    • Jesus is the Light we must walk in now: He warns that darkness overtakes those who refuse the Light, and calls people to become “children of light” by believing Him.

    • Jesus speaks with the Father’s authority: His final public message is a weighty invitation and warning—His words lead to eternal life, and rejecting them carries real judgement.

Chapter 23: The Future Foretold

  • Main Truth: Stay awake, stay faithful, love the least.
Readiness for Jesus’ return isn’t date-guessing—it’s daily loyalty that endures pressure, stewards what He gives, and serves real people with real mercy.
  • Chapter Summary: Jesus praises a poor widow’s costly gift, then leaves the temple and foretells its destruction, warning His disciples about deception, wars, persecution, and coming distress—yet anchors them in His unbreakable words and the certainty of His visible return. Through vivid parables and pictures—fig trees, watches of the night, bridesmaids with lamps, stewards with talents, and the final separating of sheep and goats—Jesus presses one clear call: stay alert, live ready, and love well until the King comes.
  • What You Will Learn in This Study:
    • Jesus values sacrificial hearts over impressive amounts—He notices what faith costs, not what it looks like on the outside.

    • Jesus warns His people repeatedly: don’t be deceived—end-times pressure will include fake “messiahs,” false prophets, and fear-fuelled confusion.

    • Jesus promises His return will be public and undeniable, and He calls disciples to watchfulness rather than panic.

    • Jesus’ words outlast everything: He says heaven and earth will pass, but His word will not—so hope isn’t built on headlines.

    • Jesus is the Bridegroom who expects readiness now, not last-minute scrambling—lamp-oil obedience can’t be borrowed when the door shuts.

    • Jesus is the Master who entrusts resources and expects faithful stewardship—fearful burying isn’t caution; it’s disloyalty.

    • Jesus is the King and Judge who measures love in action: what we do (or don’t do) for “the least” counts as done (or not done) to Him.

Chapter 22: Teaching in the Temple

  • Main Truth: Love God fully; love neighbour genuinely.
Jesus shows that real authority produces real love—love that forgives, tells the truth, and bears fruit.
  • Chapter Summary: On Tuesday in the temple courts, Jesus uses the withered fig tree and a barrage of hostile questions to teach faith-filled prayer with forgiveness, expose hollow leadership, and warn that fruitless religion forfeits the kingdom’s joy.
  • What You Will Learn in This Study:
    • Jesus links faith and forgiveness: bold prayer without a forgiving heart is like a ute with no fuel—looks fine, goes nowhere.

Jesus exposes fear-driven leadership: the leaders won’t answer honestly because they’re trapped by public opinion, not anchored in truth.

    • Jesus demands real repentance and fruit, not big talk: the parables (two sons, tenants, wedding feast) show God wants obedience that actually shows up.

    • Jesus teaches wisdom without compromise: “Give Caesar what bears Caesar’s image… and give God what bears God’s image” calls our whole lives back to God.

    • Jesus reveals the God of the living: He corrects resurrection confusion by rooting hope in Scripture and God’s power.

    • Jesus centres the whole Law on love: wholehearted love for God and neighbour is the load-bearing beam that holds everything else up.

    • Jesus confronts hypocrisy and mourns hard hearts: His woes and His lament show a King who tells the truth and longs to gather His people.

Chapter 21: The King Comes to Jerusalem

  • Main Truth: The promised King arrives—humble, holy, saving.
Jesus rides in lowly, weeps truthfully, and cleanses worship boldly—offering real peace before real judgement.
  • Chapter Summary: Jesus’ final approach to Jerusalem is not random or reactionary—as crowds hail Him and leaders bristle, He deliberately fulfils prophecy, exposes empty religion, and calls people to recognise “the things that make for peace.”He comes as a different kind of King: humble rather than forceful, compassionate yet uncompromising, seeking the lost while confronting corruption—so hearts, not hype, become the battleground of His kingdom.
  • What You Will Learn in This Study:
    • Jesus Seeks the Lost on Purpose: He doesn’t wait for the “worthy” to arrive; He goes after the marginalised and brings salvation that reshapes homes and habits.

    • Jesus Rules with Humble Kingship: He stages His entrance to declare true kingship without violence—fulfilling Scripture, not feeding spectacle.

    • Jesus Keeps God’s Calendar Exactly: The Jesus Bible’s checkmate moment—174,240 days—highlights that God’s promises land right on time, and Jesus arrives precisely as foretold.

    • Jesus Weeps Because He Loves: His tears over Jerusalem show a King who warns honestly, grieves deeply, and offers peace before judgement falls.

Jesus Purifies Worship, Not Just Behaviour: He clears the marketplace because God’s house is meant to be a house of prayer for all nations, not a profit machine that crowds out outsiders.

    • Jesus Confronts Fruitless Religion: The fig tree sign warns that leafy appearances without real fruit are hypocrisy—and Jesus won’t bless pretend faith.

    • Jesus Receives Praise and Heals in the Temple: Children shout “Hosanna,” the blind and lame are healed, and Jesus keeps teaching—showing that His authority restores the broken and silences the proud.
